Pi Network is probably the most-searched coin in the UAE that you cannot buy on a UAE-licensed platform. Many residents have mined Pi on their phones for years, often from a WhatsApp group invite, and now want to know two things: where can I sell it, and how do I get dirhams out? The honest answer is that every route runs through exchanges outside UAE regulation, and the Pi community here is a favourite target for scammers.
This page explains where PI trades, why that matters legally in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the scam patterns we see most, and a careful sell process if you decide to go ahead. It does not forecast PI’s price, and it does not tell you whether to hold or sell.
What changed when Pi opened its mainnet
For years Pi was a mining app with no tradable coin. That changed on 20 February 2025, when Pi Network opened its . Trading began the same day on OKX, Bitget and MEXC, with Gate, HTX and BitMart also listing. The first day was rough: PI fell by roughly two thirds from its opening level, as many long-time miners sold at once (Cointelegraph).
Bybit went the other way. Its CEO said publicly that Bybit would not list PI and called the project a scam, citing a 2023 warning from Chinese police; Pi Network rejected the claims. Kraken opened PI trading on 13 March 2026 (Kraken blog). Binance ran a non-binding community vote in February 2025 in which most voters supported a listing, but neither Binance nor Coinbase lists PI.
Open mainnet did not make all Pi transferable. You can only move coins that have passed Pi’s KYC and been migrated to your Mainnet wallet. Around 18 million KYC-verified users were reported in spring 2026, and accounts stuck in “tentative KYC” are blocked from further migrations. If your balance has not migrated, no exchange can help you, and anyone who claims they can “unlock” it for a fee is a scammer.
Is Pi available on UAE-licensed platforms?
No platform we checked offers it. We looked at the coin lists of Rain and BitOasis, both VARA-licensed, and PI is absent from both. RAKBANK’s 21-coin list and Liv X’s 11-coin list do not include it, and we found no evidence that Binance FZE, Crypto.com or any ADGM- or CMA-licensed venue offers PI. OKX’s global platform lists PI, but we could not confirm whether its VARA-licensed UAE entity, OKX Middle East, offers it to UAE accounts. Kraken’s PI market is on its global platform; its VARA-licensed entity, Payward FZCO, has not yet launched UAE service.
Some offshore exchanges publish “PI to AED” converter pages. Those are price calculators, not licensed AED markets.
Why this matters: VARA licenses every virtual asset service provided in or from Dubai outside the DIFC, and it has been pursuing exchanges that serve Dubai residents without a licence. In March 2026 VARA issued alerts against MEXC and KuCoin entities, and in June 2026 it fined MEXC over unlicensed activity and KYC failures (Unlock). Bitget, another early PI venue, is not on the VARA register either, although we found no VARA alert naming it. If something goes wrong on an unlicensed platform, there is no UAE regulator to complain to.
Pi coin price in AED: why converters mislead
Search for the Pi price in dirhams and you get converter pages from exchanges and blogs. They take the global PI/USDT price and multiply it by 3.6725, the dirham’s dollar peg. That gives a number, not a market. No licensed UAE platform quotes PI/AED, so no one is obliged to buy your Pi at that rate in dirhams.
Some converters even show an “IOU” pair from before the mainnet opened, which reflected bets on a future token rather than real coins. The converter on this page shows the same type of reference figure. Treat it as an estimate of what your PI might fetch on an offshore exchange, in USDT, before fees and slippage, not as a rate someone in Dubai will pay you in cash.
The scams that target Pi holders in the UAE
The Pi community is large, many members are new to crypto, and lots of balances are stuck in migration. That combination attracts fraud. These are the patterns to know.
Fake Pi buyers. Someone in a WhatsApp or Facebook group offers to buy your Pi for AED, often well above the exchange price. The script then asks for your 24-word wallet passphrase “to verify the coins”, or asks you to send Pi first with the dirhams to follow. The passphrase is your wallet; whoever has it can empty it. Pi Network has said it never asks for passphrases.
“Pi to AED” dealers. Some accounts advertise a Pi-to-dirham service with a fixed AED rate per coin, payable in cash in Deira or by bank transfer. None we have seen is on the VARA register. Even if the dirhams arrive, they can come from someone else’s account, which exposes your bank account to a fraud investigation.
Fake apps, wallets and airdrops. Lookalike Pi wallet apps, phishing sites and “airdrops” ask you to connect a wallet or enter your passphrase. One known drainer used a fake “PINO airdrop” domain. Only install the Pi apps from official stores and check the publisher.
“Faster unlock” and migration services. Offers to speed up KYC, unlock locked Pi or fix tentative KYC for a fee have no access to Pi’s systems. They exist to collect fees or passphrases.
How to sell Pi coin safely from the UAE
If you decide to sell, the least risky path keeps three things in your control: your passphrase, the exchange you choose, and the final step into dirhams, which should happen on a UAE-licensed platform.
- Step
Finish Pi KYC and mainnet migration
Open the Pi app, complete KYC and confirm that your balance has migrated to your Mainnet wallet. Only migrated Pi can be sent. If your status is tentative or pending, wait for Pi’s process to finish; no outside service can speed it up.
- Step
Check where PI trades and the venue's UAE status
Make a shortlist of large exchanges that accept PI deposits. Check each one on the VARA register and VARA’s alerts page. None will be UAE-licensed for PI, so decide how much platform risk you accept, and prefer venues with a long track record and a clear withdrawal history.
- Step
Lock down your Pi wallet passphrase
Write the 24-word passphrase on paper and store it offline. Turn on any security options the exchange offers, including with an authenticator app. Never share a screenshot of the wallet screen that shows the passphrase.
- Step
Send a small test deposit
In the exchange, open the PI deposit page and copy the and any memo it requires. Send a small amount from your Pi wallet first. Missing a memo is a common way deposits get stuck. When it arrives, send the rest.
- Step
Sell PI for USDT, then move to a licensed platform
Sell on the PI/USDT market using a to avoid selling into a thin order book. Withdraw the USDT to a VARA-licensed platform where you hold a verified account in your own name, then convert to dirhams there and withdraw to your UAE bank. Our USDT guide covers networks and the AED rate.
- Step
Keep records for your bank
Save your Pi wallet transaction history, the exchange trade confirmations and the transaction hashes for each transfer. When dirhams from a crypto platform reach your bank account, the bank may ask where they came from. A clean paper trail from mining to a licensed off-ramp answers that question. See our guide to withdrawing crypto to a UAE bank.
Buying PI works in reverse, through the same offshore venues, with the same lack of UAE protection. If you do buy, keep the amount small and withdraw it to your own Pi wallet rather than leaving it on an unlicensed exchange.
Pi, tax and residency claims in the UAE
Two other questions come up in UAE Pi groups. The first is tax. The UAE has no personal income tax, so an individual selling mined Pi on their own account generally owes no UAE tax on the gain; corporate tax only reaches individuals whose business turnover passes AED 1 million. Your home country may see things differently, and from 2027 UAE-licensed platforms will start collecting data under the OECD’s crypto reporting framework, CARF. Our crypto tax guide has the detail.
The second is residency. Posts sometimes claim that holding or staking a coin can earn a Golden Visa. It cannot. In July 2025 the ICP, the SCA and VARA jointly rejected exactly that claim when it was made about TON, and stated that crypto holdings alone do not qualify (WAM). Any Pi “visa” or “government programme” offer is a scam by definition.
Is Pi coin legit? A balanced view
There are two honest versions of the answer.
What supports Pi. It has a functioning open mainnet, millions of KYC-verified users and a coin that trades on established exchanges, including Kraken, which listed PI after more than a year of open trading elsewhere. It is not a pure fiction: the coins exist, can be transferred, and can be sold.
What worries critics. Bybit’s CEO refused to list it and called it a scam, citing an old Chinese police warning; Pi denied that. Analysts have pointed to how opaque Pi’s lock-up and supply mechanics are as one reason Binance and Coinbase have stayed away. Day-one trading saw a sharp fall, and PI has been extremely since. The surrounding ecosystem, from fake apps to referral pressure, also attracts bad actors.
For a UAE resident, the deciding fact is local: you cannot trade PI under a UAE licence. That alone puts it in a higher risk bracket than coins such as BTC or ETH that sit inside bank apps here. If PI ever lists on a VARA-licensed platform, the picture changes, and we will update this page. Until then, a common approach is to treat any Pi balance as speculative and to sell, if you sell, in small, well-documented steps.
What to do if you have been scammed
If you sent Pi or a passphrase to a scammer, move any remaining balance to a new wallet immediately, if you still can. Report it to the police (in Dubai, through the eCrime service in the Dubai Police app or on dubaipolice.gov.ae, or call 901 for non-emergencies), and to the platform involved. Recovery is rare, so be wary of “recovery agents” who contact you afterwards; they are usually the second stage of the same scam.
