For many residents who bought their first bitcoin in the UAE before the big global exchanges arrived, BitOasis was the app. It was founded in the UAE in 2016, built around AED, and for years was the obvious local choice. Then came a VARA suspension in 2023, a comeback in 2024, a takeover by India’s CoinDCX, and a full licence that is narrower than many people assume.
This review pulls the whole story into one place: what the licence covers, what “broker-dealer” means for the prices you pay, how AED deposits and withdrawals work, what the official fee page says, and who should consider BitOasis today. We are an independent guide; nothing here is investment advice.
- Licence
- VARA — BitOasis Technologies FZE, broker-dealer (VL/2024/11/001)
- Funding
- Free AED wire & Easy Funding deposits via Zand Bank; AED 25 withdrawal
- Standout
- UAE-born platform since 2016, backed by CoinDCX
- Best for
- Simple AED buys from a UAE brand
Our verdict: A UAE-focused app with a clean VARA licence now and free AED wires via Zand Bank — fine for buying and holding mainstream coins, but it is a broker, not an exchange, and Pro fees of 0.38%/0.58% on AED pairs are high, so compare the all-in price.
Is BitOasis licensed? What its VARA broker-dealer licence covers
On the VARA public register, BitOasis Technologies FZE holds licence VL/2024/11/001, issued on 29 November 2024, status Active, for Broker-Dealer services only. BitOasis announced the full licence in December 2024 (Cointelegraph).
The licence does not include Exchange services, lending, management and investment, or derivatives. That is not a weakness in itself — many people only need to buy and sell — but it shapes what the platform can offer and how you are priced, which we explain below.
What “broker-dealer” means for you
Under VARA’s framework, an buys and sells virtual assets for clients, either arranging the trade or dealing as the counterparty. An exchange, by contrast, runs an order book where buyers and sellers are matched with each other. In practice, in the simple Lite swap you trade at the price BitOasis quotes you. That price includes a margin, the , which may not show as a separate fee. It also means no futures, no margin trading and no peer-to-peer market. Comparison sites that list BitOasis next to exchanges with order books are comparing different products.
From suspension to full licence: the BitOasis timeline
The history matters because older articles still describe BitOasis as either “suspended” or “fully licensed since 2023”. Neither is accurate today.
- 2023 — MVP licence. VARA described BitOasis as the first broker-dealer to secure a minimum viable product (MVP) operational licence (VARA news).
- July 2023 — suspension. VARA issued alerts on 10 July 2023 and suspended the MVP licence after BitOasis failed to meet key licence conditions within the required 30–60 day windows.
- August 2023 — CoinDCX capital. India’s CoinDCX provided funding during the suspension.
- 12 April 2024 — services resumed for new retail and corporate customers.
- July 2024 — acquisition. CoinDCX bought BitOasis outright for an undisclosed sum (AGBI).
- 29 November 2024 — full VARA licence VL/2024/11/001.
How to open a BitOasis account
- Step
Install the BitOasis app
Download BitOasis from the App Store or Google Play, or go to bitoasis.net. Look for the official publisher name; clone apps have targeted UAE users before.
- Step
Register and secure the account
Sign up with email and a UAE mobile number. Turn on with an authenticator app before you deposit.
- Step
Verify with Emirates ID
Complete with your Emirates ID or passport, a selfie and proof of address. Expect questions on employment, income and expected activity.
- Step
Send an AED wire from your own bank account
Use the deposit details in the app and send an AED bank transfer from a UAE account in your own name. Start small — a few hundred dirhams — to see how long your bank takes.
- Step
Buy, then test a withdrawal
Buy a small amount, then withdraw a small sum in AED back to the same account. Once the round trip works, scale up.
AED deposits and withdrawals on BitOasis
BitOasis is built around the dirham: you fund with AED bank wires and withdraw AED locally to a UAE bank account. Its bank transfer details name Zand Bank as the receiving bank (beneficiary BitOasis Technologies FZE), replacing its earlier Ajman Bank set-up. There is also a bank-linked “Easy Funding” option, plus card and Apple Pay deposits (UAE only, from AED 100). Withdrawals requested Monday to Saturday before 11:00 UAE time are processed the same day; later ones go the next banking day.
Bank friction is part of the BitOasis story. Around 2018, Emirates NBD blocked transfers to and from BitOasis for a period, and BitOasis paused dirham transactions. That is history — today’s licensed set-up is different — but it is a reminder that your bank’s own risk policies can still delay or question exchange transfers. Our guide to crypto-friendly banks in the UAE covers which banks are easiest.
BitOasis fees from the official fee page
These figures come from BitOasis’s own fiat fee page, which says 0% Easy Funding depends on your market and bank:
| Item | Fee | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| AED bank wire deposit | 0% | Min AED 100 |
| “Easy Funding” bank-link deposit | 0% | Depends on your bank |
| Card deposit | From 3.99% | AED 100–50,000 per transaction |
| AED withdrawal (UAE) | AED 25; AED 65 from AED 25,000 | Min AED 200 |
Trading fees depend on where you trade. The Lite swap shows 0% and prices through BitOasis’s quote, so the spread is the main cost. BitOasis Pro charges 0.38% maker and 0.58% taker on crypto–AED pairs at the retail tier (0.10% / 0.18% on crypto–crypto pairs), falling with 30-day volume. A worked example of why it matters: on an AED 10,000 purchase, a 1% gap between BitOasis’s quote and the market mid-price costs you AED 100 — far more than any wire fee. Before each larger buy, compare the AED price in the app with the live BTC/AED price on a licensed order book. With card deposits starting at 3.99%, the free bank wire is the obvious choice for anything but tiny amounts.
Coins and features
BitOasis’s help centre says 60+ cryptocurrencies and 200+ trading pairs on Pro. The named list covers the majors — BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL — plus popular coins like DOGE and SHIB. There is no Pi coin, and no derivatives, staking-style yield or P2P market under the broker-dealer licence.
For larger tickets, BitOasis runs an institutional (Khaleej Times). If you are moving several hundred thousand dirhams, ask for a quote rather than using the app’s instant buy. See our OTC desk guide for how quotes compare.
Custody and safety
BitOasis holds your coins for you — it is a service. The VARA licence brings supervision, AML obligations and the Travel Rule for transfers above AED 3,500, so expect to declare who owns the wallet when you withdraw crypto. It does not mean your balance is insured.
User sentiment is mixed: on Trustpilot BitOasis showed a 2.2/5 average from around 450 reviews at the time of checking, with complaints clustering around verification delays and support response times. Review sites skew negative for every exchange, but the pattern is worth knowing. Our practical rule: test a small withdrawal first, keep records of every transfer, and move long-term holdings to a wallet — our wallet guide explains how.
What CoinDCX ownership changes
BitOasis is no longer an independent UAE start-up; it is part of CoinDCX, one of India’s largest crypto exchanges. For users, the practical effects are mostly positive: a bigger balance sheet behind the business, and a parent that saw it through the licence suspension. The licensed entity, however, is still BitOasis Technologies FZE in Dubai, and VARA supervises that entity — not CoinDCX. If you ever have a dispute, your contract and your regulator are local.
It is also worth knowing that the parent’s other businesses do not make BitOasis a different product. CoinDCX’s Indian services, coin lists and promotions don’t automatically apply here. Judge BitOasis on what the VARA licence allows and what the UAE app shows you, not on what the group does elsewhere. If you hold a large balance, a sensible habit is to ask support which custodian holds client assets and how they are segregated; a licensed firm should be able to answer that clearly.
