How to Buy Solana in the UAE

Where to buy SOL with dirhams, what the Dubai 'Solana Economic Zone' headlines actually refer to, and how to use Phantom, staking and Solana's token market without getting burned.

Buy crypto

Start with a small amount you can afford to lose.

Quick answer

SOL is available on VARA-licensed platforms such as BitOasis and in the Liv X and RAKBANK bank apps, so UAE residents can buy it with AED after ID checks. Withdraw only on the Solana network, keep a little SOL for fees, and treat the flood of new Solana memecoins as the highest-risk corner of crypto.

Solana is the coin that made it into a UAE bank app on day one. When Emirates NBD’s Liv X switched on crypto trading in March 2025, SOL sat on the five-coin launch list next to Bitcoin, Ether, XRP and Cardano. It is also on BitOasis’s list and on the global menus of every large VARA-licensed exchange. Abu Dhabi’s ADGM recognises USDT on Solana as an accepted stablecoin. For a network that only launched in 2020, that is a lot of local recognition.

Solana is also home to the fastest, most chaotic memecoin market in crypto. This guide covers both sides: the clean way to buy SOL with dirhams, and the risks that come with using the network itself. It is an independent guide, not investment advice. SOL is volatile, and tokens built on Solana are far riskier still.

What the “Solana Economic Zone Dubai” headlines refer to

You may have seen “Solana Economic Zone Dubai” in your feed. Here is what we could verify. In June 2025 several outlets reported that the Solana Foundation had signed a memorandum of understanding with VARA. It covered developer education, talent pipelines, compliance workshops and research into how digital assets affect the UAE economy. It was framed as support for a “Solana Economic Zone” in Dubai, a community and founder hub modelled on an earlier one in Buenos Aires (FXStreet).

What it is not: a physical free zone, a licence, or an endorsement of SOL as an investment. We did not find a VARA press release with the MoU text, so treat the details as press reports. For a buyer, nothing changes. You still buy SOL through a licensed platform, under the same KYC and Travel Rule rules as any other coin. The MoU is mainly relevant if you are building a Solana project in Dubai and want to understand the licensing path.

Where to buy SOL with dirhams

The licensed options for SOL are broader than for most altcoins:

  • Liv X (Emirates NBD). SOL was on the launch list and remains on the current 11-coin list, with VARA-licensed Aquanow ME FZE as broker and custody at Zodia Custody. It suits people who want SOL inside their existing bank relationship. The standard commission on Liv’s charges page is 2% + VAT, waived during limited-time campaigns.
  • RAKBANK. Offers 21 coins, SOL among them, through Bitpanda Broker MENA FZCO with a 0.5% buy fee on the standard tier. Coins bought there cannot be sent to an external wallet such as Phantom.
  • BitOasis (VARA licence VL/2024/11/001, broker-dealer) names Solana in its supported list.
  • Binance FZE, OKX Middle East, Crypto.com and Rain hold VARA licences and list SOL on their platforms; Rain charges 0% trading fees in the UAE, with a margin built into the price. Confirm availability for UAE clients in the app.
  • CEX.IO sells SOL to UAE residents by card and Apple Pay. It is a global exchange operating since 2013, with a Gibraltar GFSC DLT-provider licence and US FinCEN MSB registration, and has no AED bank rail.

You can check any licence on the VARA public register. If you want to compare platforms more broadly, our guides to the best crypto exchanges in the UAE and how to buy crypto in the UAE go into fees and funding.

A quick cost check. Say you buy AED 2,000 of SOL. In a bank app charging 0.5%, you pay AED 10. On an exchange where you go AED → USDT → SOL at roughly 0.1–0.135% per leg, you pay around AED 5 in trading fees plus the spread on each leg. Neither is expensive for a single purchase. The bank route is simpler, and the exchange route lets you withdraw to your own wallet.

Step by step: buying Solana with AED

  1. Step

Pick a licensed platform or bank app with SOL

Decide first whether you will ever want SOL in your own wallet. If yes, use an exchange that supports Solana-network withdrawals. If you only want price exposure, a bank app is fine. Either way, check the provider on the VARA register.

  2. Step

Verify your ID and fund in AED

Complete with Emirates ID or passport, a selfie and proof of address where asked. Transfer dirhams from an account in your own name; third-party deposits are usually returned. Bank apps skip this step because the bank already knows you.

  3. Step

Buy SOL with a limit order

Use a , especially on a two-step route via USDT. Check the on broker-style screens. Many people make a first purchase of a few hundred dirhams to learn the flow.

  4. Step

Set up Phantom or a Ledger if you want self-custody

Install Phantom only from phantom.com or the official app store listing; fake wallet apps are common. Write the recovery phrase on paper and store it offline. For larger amounts, a Ledger can be connected to Phantom so every transaction is signed on the device.

  5. Step

Withdraw on the Solana network with a test first

Choose the Solana network in the withdrawal form and paste your Phantom or Ledger address. Send a small test and confirm it arrived before sending the rest. Leave a little SOL in the wallet, because every Solana transaction and every new token account needs some SOL to pay for it.

Network fees and wallets on Solana

Solana is built for throughput. Blocks come every fraction of a second, and the base fee per transaction is a tiny fraction of a cent. During busy periods users add a priority fee to get ahead in the queue, but even then sending SOL usually costs far less than an Ethereum transaction. Exchanges add their own fixed withdrawal fee, which is often the largest cost for a small transfer.

Two technical points catch newcomers. First, Solana tokens (called SPL tokens, including USDT on Solana) each live in a separate token account. Receiving a new token creates one, which needs a small SOL deposit. If your wallet has zero SOL, you cannot move the tokens you hold. Second, the must match. A Solana address will not receive SOL sent on another chain, and a “SOL” token on BNB Smart Chain is not native Solana.

Common wallet choices for UAE users:

  • Phantom: the most widely used Solana , on mobile and as a browser extension.
  • Solflare: another Solana-native wallet with built-in staking.
  • Ledger: cold storage; buy in the UAE from official resellers such as Noon, Virgin Megastores, Shift Electronics or Dubai Duty Free.

Our UAE wallet guide compares them in more detail.

Staking SOL: what to know before you opt in

Solana uses proof-of-stake. You can SOL by delegating it to a validator and earning a share of network rewards. Unlike Ethereum, there is no 32-coin minimum. Phantom and Solflare let you delegate from your own wallet, and the SOL stays in your control.

There are a few caveats:

  • Timing. Staking and unstaking take effect at epoch boundaries, roughly every two days. Your SOL is not instantly liquid.
  • Variable rewards. Returns depend on the validator’s commission and network conditions. They are not interest, and they are not guaranteed.
  • Validator choice. A poorly run validator earns less. Concentrating stake on the biggest validators also weakens the network.
  • Liquid staking tokens (such as jitoSOL or mSOL) add smart-contract risk on top of SOL’s price risk.
  • Regulated platforms. Staking through a Dubai platform is a regulated service. VARA allows it only with specific approval, for example for licensed custodians under its 2023 custody rules (VARA). Check that the platform has that approval before you opt in.

Solana memecoins: the riskiest corner of the market

Solana’s low fees made it the default home for memecoin launchpads, where anyone can create and list a token in minutes. A large share of these tokens collapse within days. Some are deliberate scams: liquidity pulled by the creator, “honeypot” tokens you can buy but never sell, or fake versions of trending tickers. Trading them usually means connecting Phantom to a decentralised exchange (a ), so no UAE-licensed platform stands between you and the contract.

VARA’s 13 February 2025 alert on warned that they are speculative, open to manipulation and often promoted with unrealistic returns (VARA alert). Locally, the usual pattern is a Telegram “alpha group” that pushes a new Solana token, asks you to connect your wallet to a “claim” page, and drains it.

A few rules that help:

  • Use a separate “burner” wallet with a small amount for any token experiments, and keep your main SOL elsewhere.
  • Never sign a transaction you do not understand, and turn on Phantom’s transaction previews and warnings.
  • Check the token’s contract address from the project’s official channel. A matching ticker proves nothing.
  • Never share your recovery phrase. No airdrop, support agent or “verification” needs it.

Tax, Travel Rule and records

Individuals in the UAE pay no personal income tax, so gains on SOL held as a personal investment are not taxed here. Staking rewards for an individual are also outside personal income tax, but frequent trading at business scale can fall under the 9% corporate tax. Your home country’s rules still apply to you. For withdrawals above AED 3,500 to your own wallet, expect a Travel Rule declaration from the platform. See crypto tax in the UAE for details.

Keep exports from your exchange and, if you use Phantom heavily, a record of your wallet address and transaction history. The public Solana explorers make this easy, and it is what a UAE bank will want if you later cash out a large gain.

Our practical take on SOL

SOL is one of the easiest altcoins to buy through licensed channels in the UAE, including inside a bank app. A sensible setup is to buy on a licensed platform and move longer-term SOL to Phantom secured by a Ledger. Stake only if you understand the timing, and keep memecoin experiments in a separate wallet with money you can lose. The Solana Economic Zone headlines are good for Dubai’s developer scene, but they are not a reason to buy.
