Kraken Review for UAE Residents

Kraken is one of the oldest global exchanges, and it has just been cleared to serve the UAE from Dubai. Here is what the licence covers, what has been announced, and what is still waiting on approval.

Quick answer

Kraken serves the UAE through Payward FZCO, VARA licence VL/26/10/002 (broker-dealer and management & investment, not exchange services), issued in October 2026 after an in-principle approval in May. Kraken plans AED-quoted pairs, direct AED funding, on-chain staking and Kraken Prime/OTC for institutions, but AED is not yet listed on its cash-deposit page and no AED fees are published. Derivatives still need VARA approval.

Kraken has been around since 2011 and built its reputation on security and a conservative listings policy. In the UAE, though, it is the newest of the big licensed names: VARA’s full approval came only in October 2026, and Kraken said it would start serving UAE clients “in the coming weeks”. That means this review is part analysis, part checklist — what the licence allows, what Kraken has committed to, and what you should verify in your own account as the service goes live.

As always, we stick to the VARA register and Kraken’s own statements, flag anything we could not verify, and give no investment advice. We are an independent guide.

Our verdict: A strong long-term option for experienced investors who want staking and an institutional OTC route under a fresh VARA broker-dealer licence — but AED funding is announced rather than live, AED fees are unpublished and derivatives are not yet approved.

Kraken’s licence in the UAE: Payward FZCO, VL/26/10/002

The licensed entity is Payward FZCO, part of Payward, the parent of Kraken. On the VARA public register it holds licence VL/26/10/002, issued 6 October 2026, status Active. The activities listed are Management & Investment and Broker-Dealer services; Exchange services are not on the licence.

The path was quick by VARA standards. Payward received in May 2026 (Business Wire), which let it build local operations but not onboard clients. Full Market Approval was announced on 12 October 2026 and covers retail, professional and institutional clients (Finance Magnates).

One caveat from Kraken’s own announcement deserves emphasis: services for retail clients are limited to those VARA expressly permits for retail, and may differ from what professional clients see. If something you use on Kraken abroad is missing from your UAE account, that is usually why.

What Kraken offers UAE clients — and what is still pending

According to Kraken’s announcement, the planned UAE launch includes:

  • AED-quoted spot and margin pairs — trade BTC, ETH and others directly against dirhams. Kraken’s co-CEO said UAE clients would get “the same order book” as other markets.
  • Direct AED deposits and withdrawals, through a locally regulated Payward subsidiary.
  • On-chain for retail users.
  • xStocks (tokenised US-listed shares) and transfers through the Krak app.
  • OTC spot trading and Kraken Prime for institutional clients.

What is not there yet: crypto derivatives and further yield products, which Kraken expects later in 2026 and into 2027, subject to VARA approval. Under VARA’s rules a platform needs explicit approval before offering futures, options or perpetuals. Margin trading is also subject to VARA’s rules on leverage and eligibility, so retail margin access may be narrower than the headline suggests.

How to open a Kraken account from the UAE

The exact onboarding screens for the UAE entity were still being rolled out when we checked, so treat this as the expected flow based on Kraken’s standard process and VARA requirements.

  1. Step

Sign up on the official site or app

Go to kraken.com or install Kraken (or Kraken Pro) from the official app store. Select the UAE as your country of residence so you are onboarded to the VARA-licensed entity.

  2. Step

    Secure the account first

Set up with an authenticator app or a hardware security key. Kraken also offers a global settings lock and a master key — worth setting up before you fund.

  3. Step

    Verify identity and residence

Complete with your Emirates ID or passport, proof of UAE address and a selfie. Expect suitability questions, especially if you want margin, because VARA requires firms to assess retail clients.

  4. Step

Fund with AED once it appears in your account

When AED funding is live in your account, send a small transfer from a UAE bank account in your own name. Check the deposit fee and timing on the funding screen before sending more.

  5. Step

Place a limit order on an AED pair

Buy on an AED-quoted pair using a rather than a market order, especially while liquidity on new AED pairs builds up.

Kraken AED deposits, withdrawals and fees

Kraken has announced direct AED deposits and withdrawals, but its cash-deposit options page lists USD, EUR, GBP and other currencies with no AED, and Kraken has not published UAE-specific fees for AED funding or for trading AED pairs. Globally Kraken uses a fee schedule on Kraken Pro and a simpler, more expensive pricing on its instant-buy screen. Whether the UAE entity mirrors the global schedule is something to check on Kraken’s fee page once your account is live.

A practical point on new AED pairs: an order book is only as good as its . In the first weeks after launch, AED pairs may have wider spreads than BTC/USD or BTC/USDT on the same platform. A worked example: if BTC/AED on Kraken shows a spread of 0.3% while the USD pair shows 0.02%, buying AED 50,000 directly through the AED pair costs you roughly AED 150 in spread alone. Compare before you click, and use limit orders.

Coins, staking and Kraken Prime

Kraken’s global coin list is long but more selective than some rivals. Which coins the UAE entity offers depends on VARA’s rules for each asset, so check the list in your UAE account. One example of the gap between global and local: Kraken’s global platform listed Pi coin in March 2026, but we found no evidence that any UAE-licensed platform offers PI — see our Pi coin guide.

Staking is the feature many UAE investors will notice. It lets you earn variable rewards on proof-of-stake coins, but rewards are not guaranteed, some assets have unbonding periods during which you can’t sell, and you are trusting Kraken with custody of staked coins.

For institutions and very large private trades, Kraken’s OTC desk and Kraken Prime operate under the same Dubai licence. If your ticket runs into six or seven figures in AED, a quoted OTC trade is usually better than sweeping a newly launched AED order book. Our OTC desk guide explains how to compare quotes.

Custody and safety at Kraken

Kraken is known for its security culture and was one of the first large exchanges to publish attestations. It has no history of a major platform hack. That track record is a genuine point in its favour, but it does not remove risk: coins on any exchange are only as safe as that exchange.

The VARA licence adds supervision, AML obligations and the Travel Rule for transfers above AED 3,500. For long-term holdings, the usual rule applies — keep them in a wallet you control. Our crypto wallet guide covers hardware and software options available in the UAE.

Kraken vs OKX for AED traders

The most natural comparison is OKX, which already runs an AED order book under its own VARA licence and publishes its AED pair fees. Right now OKX has the advantage of a track record in the UAE: known fees, known deposit routes and months of AED liquidity. Kraken’s advantages are its long security record, staking for retail clients and a clear institutional path through Kraken Prime under the same licence.

If you are deciding today, a sensible approach is not to choose on brand alone. Open the Kraken account, wait until AED funding and fees appear in your dashboard, then compare the all-in cost of a typical trade — say AED 5,000 of BTC — on both platforms on the same day: fee plus spread plus withdrawal cost. Whichever wins on your usual trade size is the better tool for you.

Who Kraken suits

What works

  • VARA licence VL/26/10/002 (Payward FZCO), issued October 2026
  • AED pairs and direct AED funding announced for UAE clients
  • On-chain staking listed for UAE retail clients
  • OTC spot and Kraken Prime for institutions under the same licence
  • No major platform hack in its history; publishes proof-of-reserves attestations

What to know

  • Licence covers broker-dealer and management & investment, not exchange services
  • AED funding not yet listed; AED fees not published
  • Derivatives not approved; expected late 2026–2027
  • New AED pairs may start with thin liquidity
  • Retail access limited to what VARA permits for retail clients

Kraken suits experienced investors who already know order books and want an established global name with AED pairs and staking under Dubai regulation, and institutions that need OTC or prime brokerage. Beginners who want a simple app with published AED fees today may be better served elsewhere for now.
